Tigers Eager to Face Central State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Following a thrilling 42-35 win over Tarleton State at Tiger Stadium, the University of West Alabama football team prepares for its second home game as UWA (1-1) faces Central State on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tiger Walk is set for 3:45 p.m.

Saturday's opponent, Central State, becomes the first opponent from the State of Ohio that West Alabama will face in its 80 year history and is the third first time foe this season.

The Tigers racked up 446 yards of total offense in their home opener against Tarleton. UWA enters the contest against Central State averaging 357 total offensive yards. The Tigers are averaging 198 rushing yards – which is 36th nationally - with a159 through the air.

Junior signal caller Gary Johnston continues to pilot the offense. The Gulf Shores, Ala., native notched his first-ever award after leading UWA to its first win of the season while throwing for 217 yards and racking up a team-best 106 rushing yards. Johnston accounted for four of the Red and White's six touchdowns including three TD tosses and a rushing score. On the season, Johnston has rushed for a team-leading 178 yards and thrown for 318 with a combined five TDs.

Gerald Worsham and Ken May have proven to be the main targets for Johnston. Worsham leads the team in receptions with 11 while May paces the receiving corp in yards with 140. Worsham hauled in six catches for 45 yards in the win over TSU becoming the program's all-time leader in receptions.

Defensively for the Red and White, five Tigers have recorded 10 or more tackles led by Deon Lacey's 17 stops. Lacey led UWA with 12 against the Texans on Saturday evening. Gabe Poe – 2010's season leader in tackles – ranks second on the squad with 16 with Otha Foster registering 13 tackles. D'Eric Jackson and Shontral Ford have each tallied 10 stops.

Central State – which is coached by former Alabama standout E. J. Junior - enters Saturday coming off of a 42-3 loss to N.C. Central in the 2011 Cleveland Classic. Trailing 35-0, the Marauders picked up their only points of the game on a Gracey Mahbena 25-yard field goal as time expired before the half. The field goal capped a 13 play, 58 yard drive that took the final 2:24 off of the clock in the first half. The Eagles added one more touchdown in the third quarter to complete the scoring. As a team, CSU is averaging 12 points per game and 210 yards of total offense. The Marauders are allowing 421.5 total yards through their first two games of the season.

Offensively, CSU is led by Jeff Brooks who ranks 79th in the country in pass efficiency. Steven Heard stands as the leading receiver for the Marauders – averaging five receptions and 91 yards per game. Darius Wilson stands as the leader on defense – ranking 11th the country in tackles with 12.5 per game with 2.25 going for loss of yardage – which ranks 22nd nationally.
