LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team looks to snap a two-game, Gulf South Conference losing skid as the Tigers (6-9, 1-3 GSC) host Valdosta State on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. Free Domino's pizza will be handed out to students prior to tip-off. Air-time is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. on ESPN 104.9 FM.
UWA not only looks to snap its current slide, but also a 10-game skid to the Lady Blazers that dates back to 2006.
After winning five of their last six outings, the Red and White has stumbled in three of their last four contests - all in conference -, including setbacks at Christian Brothers and Delta State.
Both squads enter the contest relatively close in shooting percentages as a team. UWA holds an advantage on the season with 41.5 rebounds per game – which ranks second in the conference – while the Red and Black stands seventh with 35.9 per outing. However, VSU sits atop the conference in three-point percentage as a team, connecting on just over 33-percent of its shots from behind the arc while the Tigers are eighth at 21-percent.
Juniors
Brittany Weathers and Nikka Jordan continue to pace the Red and White. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native, Weathers averages 14 points and 8.9 boards per game, leading the team, while Jordan, a product of Decatur, Ala., is second on the squad in scoring with 10.6 points an outing. Senior
Danielle Cole is dishing out a team-best 2.5 assists per contest.
VSU is led by Brittany Ferguson and Sczeny Hartry. Ferguson leads the way with 16.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per outing while Hartry is second on the team averaging 11.6 points. Brittany Nelson and Bena Hanyard come off the bench for the Red and Black averaging approximately 8 points per game.
Following Thursday's conference tilt, West Alabama travels to West Florida on Sunday, Jan. 22 for a 2 p.m. tip time. The game can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com.
