LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A team season-high shooting percentage leads the University of West Alabama women's basketball team to its first Gulf South Conference of the season. UWA (6-7) shot 47.5 percent from the field en route to a 70-63 win over North Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
Along with a season-high shooting percentage from the field, the Tigers also converted on 21 second chance points, besting the Lions (8-5) by 12 in the category.
The victory snapped a four-game losing skid to the Lions – giving the Red and White its first win in the series since Feb. 14, 2009.
A trio of Tigers scored in double figures led by
Brittany Weathers' 16 points. The junior has tallied double digits 10 times this season.
Nikkia Jordan and
Jamie Gunter joined the Hattiesburg, Miss., native with 14 and 10 points respectively. It marks the eighth game in double figures for Jordan while Gunter's 10 – all off the bench – is her fifth game in double digits.
Synthea Reed hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds.
UWA led much of the first half, but UNA rattled off a 9-2 run during the final minutes to take a 35-28 lead with just over a minute to play before the half. Following an old fashioned three-point play by Gunter, the Purple and Gold headed into the locker room holding onto a 35-31 lead.
After the two squads exchanged leads over the first 13 minutes of the second 20-minute period,
Kenyatta Epps put the Tigers up 55-52 on a three-pointer with 6:44 remaining. UWA wouldn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the contest, reaching its largest lead with 32 ticks on the clock on a free-throw by Jordan.
West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 12 at Christian Brothers. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game can be followed on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com.
