UWA Softball Logs First Win of Season to Close Hughston Sports Clinic Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. --  The University of West Alabama softball picked up its first win of the 2012 season in its final game of the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic by downing Augusta State 7-4. The victory came after the Tigers (1-3) had fallen 14-3 earlier in the day to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Just a day after the Red and White accumulated just three hits in the span of two days, the Tigers brought the bats out on Saturday combining for 17 hits during the final day of the classic.

Rebecca Schick led the effort in the second game of the day going 2-for-4 from the dish with four RBI and two runs scored. The New Orleans, La., native also logged her first two homeruns of the season belting a solo homer in the fourth inning to the tie contest and then sending a 3-run blast over right center in the sixth to place the Tigers in the lead at 4-1.

Newcomers Kelsey Cooper and Tamara Vickers also provided multiple hit efforts in the win. Cooper finished with a 2-for-3 day at the dish with a run scored while Vickers went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI – the final two of day securing the victory.

Jessica Brock logged the first triumph of her career in a UWA uniform with a complete game effort. The Gallion, Ala., product allowed 6 hits along with 4 runs – all unearned. The freshman surrendered 10 walks while fanning 6.

In the opener of the day, LRC opened with an onslaught of 10 runs in the first three innings to take control of the contest early. The Bears drove in all 14 runs on nine hits capitalizing on five Tiger errors in the field.

Trying to chip away at LRC's lead, UWA posted its three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Scarlett Wright drove in the first run of the day followed by RBI from Schick and Mandi Headrick in the fifth frame, but the Bears added four more runs in the sixth to claim the win.

Headrick, Schick and Wright posted three of the Tigers' seven hits in the contest.

Hannah Griffin (0-2) tossed four innings in the loss, allowing 10 runs – just two earned - on six hits. The senior fanned a pair while walking eight in the effort. Taylor Tucker pitched the final two innings with four earned runs allowed on three hits with a trio of walks and strikeouts.
