LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After going 1-3 on opening weekend, the University of West Alabama softball team prepares for its second tournament of the 2012 season as the Tigers travel to Decatur, Ala., this weekend for the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout. UWA opens the event at 10:30 a.m. against Indianapolis followed by a 2:30 affair with Wayne State.
Last season, UWA posted a 5-1 mark in the Chillout. Under fifth-year, head coach
Will Atkinson the Tigers have put together a successful run at the Chillout boasting a 15-7 record.
Newcomer
Stephanie Shoup led the Red and White at the dish in the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic. The Oviedo, Fla., native hit a team leading .429 along with four walks for a team-best .636 on-base percentage. Fellow newcomer
Mandi Headrick joined Shoup among the .400-hitting clips with a .400 mark.
Sophomore
Rebecca Schick drove in half of the Tigers' runs this weekend with five RBI. The New Orleans, La., product belted three homeruns in one day along with three runs scored.
Angela Arredondo also logged a homer during the week – her first in a Tiger uniform.
Freshman
Jessica Brock tallied a 1-1 record in three starts last weekend, including a complete game performance in the 7-4 victory over Augusta State to close the classic. The Gallion, Ala., native registered a 2.50 ERA in 14 innings pitched while holding the opposition to a .216 batting average.
UWA has winning records against four of the schools it faces this weekend (Indianapolis: 2-1, Bellarmine: 1-0, Northern Kentucky: 3-2 and Rollins: 3-0). The Tigers are 2-3 against Wayne State and will face Palm Beach Atlantic for the first time in school history.
