DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball split for the second straight day at the UAH Charger Chillout with 5-0 win over Northern Kentucky in the second contest of the day. The Tigers (3-5) fell 4-2 to Bellarmine to open the day.
UWA tallied the first runs of the outing with NKU as the Red and White plated a quick three runs in the second inning.
Morgan Morrison supplied much of the punch in the frame with a 2-run homerun to left center that scored
Taylor Beck. The homer was the first career collegiate hit for the Lawley, Ala., native. Morrison finished the contest 2-for-2.
The Tigers' first run came when Beck reached on a fielder's choice that plated
Kelsey Cooper.
The Norse attempted several rallies during the affair, but on three occasions NKU had runners thrown out at the plate – keeping the Red and White in front.
Kristen Skinner (1-1) logged her first win of the season with a complete game outing. The Toxey, Ala., product surrendered just five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks on the afternoon.
UWA added two additional runs in the sixth inning as
Tamara Vickers, who went 4-for-4 at the plate, and
Rebecca Schick each drove in a run.
UWA loaded the bases in the first at-bat with no outs, but managed only a run as
Stephanie Shoup walked to push
Tamara Vickers across the dish.
BU answered with homeruns in the second, third and fourth innings to gain a 4-1 advantage. Megan Murdoch's 2-run, homer in third frame was sandwiched between solo dingers from Tanner Tevis and Scarlett Powers.
The Tigers scratched a run across in the sixth to narrow the lead to 4-2 as
Kelsey Cooper beat a throw to the plate to score from first on a Shoup double to left field. The throw to the plate allowed Shoup to advance to third.
Brooklyn Phillips took the loss in the circle – her first of the season – as she pitched 3 innings with 4 runs allowed on 4 hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout in the start.
Hannah Griffin tossed the final 3 frames with a hit allowed.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 against Palm Beach Atlantic in the final day of the UAH Charger Chillout. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
