PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama softball pitching duo of
Kristen Skinner and
Jessica Brock turned in a pair of complete game performances as the Tigers (9-7) logged wins in the opening weekend of Gulf South Conference play at West Florida on Saturday evening. UWA claimed the first game 2-0 and followed with a 5-1 outcome.
Skinner logged her third win of the season in game one by fanning 6 in the contest with a pair of walks and scattered 3 hits. Brock (6-1) spread around 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. The pitching duo combined allowed just 5 total hits in the twinbill.
In the opener, UWA tallied just 4 hits on the afternoon with 2 coming in the top of the seventh.
Morgan Morrison, in a pinch hitting appearance, delivered a 2-out, 2-RBI single that scored
Taylor Miller and
Taylor Beck. Miller drew a walk to put the first Tiger on board. Beck followed with the second of her hits on the afternoon.
After
Angela Arredondo reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Morrison distributed the eventual game winning hit.
The Tigers posted 11 hits in the night cap of the twinbill and sandwiched 3 runs in the second inning between solo spots in the first and third frames.
Vickers was the first run of the contest scoring on a
Stephanie Shoup base hit through the right side in the opening inning. The Lawndale, Calif., native, Vickers tripled in the second frame to scored
Mandi Headrick and Arredondo. Vickers scored later in the inning on a
Kelsey Cooper groundout.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the third inning as Shoup scored on a ground ball out by Miller.
UWF's lone run of the contest came on a Kasie Buckley double to left field that scored Amber Ingram.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 17 as the Tigers travel to Valdosta State for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. central.
