LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After starting Gulf South Conference action with a pair of wins last weekend, the University of West Alabama softball team returns to the diamond this weekend in the Peach State with doubleheaders at No. 3 Valdosta State on Saturday and Sunday at West Georgia. First pitch at VSU is 2 p.m. central while UWG is set 1 p.m. central.
The Tigers (9-7) pounded out 15 hits in the victories at West Florida with reigning GSC Player of the Week
Taylor Beck providing four hits in the twinbill. Junior
Stephanie Shoup added three hits during the weekend with
Tamara Vickers and
Kelsey Cooper each providing two.
The pitching duo of
Kristen Skinner and
Jessica Brock each provided phenomenal, complete game outings the circle while holding the Argos to a .104 batting average. Skinner scattered three hits in her seven innings in the circle while fanning six batters. Brock, a two-time GSC Pitcher of the Week, struck out seven while allowing a run on two hits.
On the season, Vickers and Schick has been the catalyst at the dish as the pair rank at the top in most offensive categories for the Tigers. Vickers stands as the team-leader with a .467 batting average and three triples on the season. The Lawndale, Calif., native is tied for second on the squad with 10 RBI alongside teammate
Taylor Miller. Schick sits atop the team in RBI with 16 and homeruns with four. The New Orleans, La., product ranks second on the squad with a .357 hitting clip.
Skinner and Brock has combined for all nine wins. Brock, a Gallion, Ala., native, has registered a team-leading 39 strikeouts in 38.2 innings of work. Skinner, a native of Toxey, Ala., is has totaled a staff-best 1.82 ERA while sitting just behind Brock in innings pitched (34.2) and strikeouts (34).
Samantha Posey leads a quartet of Blazers batting .400-plus at the dish with a .462 hitting clip. Seven VSU batters have already driven in 10 or more runs this season led by Courtney Albritton's 18 RBI. Alanna Hadley has registered six wins in the circle for the Red and Black pitching staff while fanning 31 batters in 48.1 innings of work. VSU sits 13-2 on the season with its only two setbacks coming in one-run contests against Barry (1-0) and against Pittsburgh State (4-3).
West Georgia heads into this week's games with a 6-15 record overall and 0-2 mark in GSC play. Last week, the Wolves faced a pair of top five opponents in North Georgia and Valdosta State, going 0-4 in those matchups. The Wolves' offense is currently led by Nicole Yancey with a batting average of .404 and a slugging percentage of .807. Yancey has 17 runs scored on the season and 25 RBI.
Last season, the Tigers dropped all three outings against VSU and claimed the final two meetings against UWG to force a split on the season.
Following the conference twinbills this weekend, West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 20 at Tuskegee. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
