VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a doubleheader at Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers (9-9 overall, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) recorded on two runs on five total hits in the twinbill. VSU blanked the Tigers 8-0 in the opener and followed with a 9-2 victory in Game 2.
The third-ranked Blazers improved to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
In the night cap of the twinbill,
Taylor Beck and
Rebecca Schick combined for the two runs driven in as
Brittany Smith and
Mandi Headrick each scored in the third inning. The pair of runs tied the contest at 2-all after VSU plated its first two runs in the first frame.
The Blazers regained the lead at 4-2 in the fourth with two runs and continued to add on run support in the fifth and sixth innings with two and three runs respectively.
Brianna Hancock (5-1) logged the win in the circle for the Red and Black with 3.1 innings of work. The sophomore held the Tigers at bay allowing just one hit while fanning three and walking one in the win.
UWA sent a total of four pitchers into the circle in the setback. Freshman
Jessica Brock was tagged with the loss – her second on the season – after surrendering four runs on two hits.
The Tiger bats went cold in the opener as the Red and White managed just a pair of hits.
Taylor Beck logged the first hit in the first inning, but was left stranded on the base path along with
Rebecca Schick who walked earlier in the frame.
Morgan Morrison provided the only other base hit with a single through the right side in the fourth inning. UWA left four on base in the loss.
Alanna Hadley (8-1) picked up the win for the Blazers with a complete game performance. Hadley fanned six in the outcome.
Kristen Skinner (3-2) was saddled with the loss as the UWA starter tossed 5.1 innings with six runs allowed on nine hits. The senior fanned one and walked one in the affair.
West Alabama travels to West Georgia on Sunday, Mar. 18 for a 1 p.m. central contest against the Wolves.
