UWA Softball Closes Georgia Road Trip with Split at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Alabama softball team concluded its Gulf South Conference road swing through Georgia with a split in the doubleheader against West Georgia on Sunday afternoon. UWA ripped the Wolves pitching for 13 hits en route to a 7-3 win in the opener before falling 4-3 in the second contest.

Kelsey Cooper led the Tigers at dish going 5-for-7 with a double and run scored in the twinbill.

The Tigers also cranked four homeruns on the afternoon with three solo shots in the second game. Rebecca Schick totaled two homers on the afternoon, including a three-run road tripper in the first game. The New Orleans, La., native finished the doubleheader with a team-best five RBI.

Brittany Smith and Brooklynn Phillips each rattled off solo homers in the second game as Phillips tied the contest at 3-all in the seventh frame – her first of the season.

Schick and Smith each finished with a .500 batting average while Phillips ended at .333 on the plate.

Taylor Beck and Stephanie Shoup each joined Phillips with a .333 average at the dish. The pair each posted 2-for-6 efforts while Beck drove in a run while Shoup scored twice in the outings.

Kristen Skinner (4-2) fanned seven and walked six in a complete victory in the opener. The Toxey, Ala., senior allowed three runs on five hits in the victory.

Jessica Brock (6-3) was saddled with the loss in the second contest as the Gallion, Ala., product surrendered four runs – three earned – on seven hits. Brock struck out three and walked two in the decision.

West Alabama returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 20 as the Tigers travel to Tuskegee. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
