Tigers Prepare for Mid-Week Contests; Travel to Tuskegee and Host Southern Arkansas

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team returns to the diamond for a pair of mid-week doubleheaders beginning on Tuesday, Mar. 20 at Tuskegee at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. start at the UWA Softball Complex against Southern Arkansas on Wednesday, Mar. 21.

The twinbill against SAU is the first of five straight home dates for the Tigers (10-10, 3-3 GSC) which includes four doubleheaders against Christian Brothers (Mar. 24), Delta State (Mar. 25), North Alabama (Mar. 31) and Alabama-Huntsville (Apr. 1).

UWA looks to return back to winning form after dropping three of four on the weekend in conference play.

Brittany Smith and Kelsey Cooper each hit .500 on the weekend to lead the squad. Smith connected on her first homerun of the season – one of four total hit by the Red and White in the four games. Rebecca Schick hit two of the homers, including a three-run shot, while Brooklynn Phillips connected on the other.

Kristen Skinner logged the only victory in the circle – a 7-3 decision at West Georgia. Skinner fanned seven and walked six in the complete game win. The Toxey, Ala., senior allowed three runs on five hits in the victory.

On the season, Schick and Tamara Vickers lead the team in most offensive categories. Vickers leads in hits (21), batting average (.467), on-base percentage (.520) and triples (3) while Schick sits atop the team in homeruns (6), RBI (22), runs (15), walks (14) and slugging percentage (.750). Stephanie Shoup paces the squad in doubles with four.

Skinner leads the Tiger hurlers with a 2.09 ERA and is second in innings pitched (47), strikeouts (42) and wins (4) behind freshman Jessica Brock. Brock has tossed 48.1 innings with 45 strikeouts and six wins on the campaign.

A 10-0 win in the second game salvaged a split with Tuskegee in the first doubleheader of the season as UWA fell 6-5 in extra innings in the opening game.
