Tiger Softball Posts Shutouts in Sweep at Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team posts a pair of shutouts en route to a doubleheader sweep of Tuskegee. The Tigers (12-10) closed out the twinbill with a season-best 14 runs after scoring six runs in the opener. The pitching duo of Kristen Skinner and Jessica Brock tossed complete games in the victories.

Skinner (5-2) fanned a total of eight TU batters en route to the victory in the circle tying her season-high also set against the Lady Golden Tigers on Mar. 6. The Toxey, Ala., native gave up a pair of hits in the seven innings.

Brock (7-3) followed up the first game performance allowing just one hit while striking out seven in five innings.

UWA pounded out six runs on six hits in the opener with three runs coming in the sixth inning. Brooklynn Phillips launched her second homerun of the season to lift the Tigers to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The homer came on a 2-1 count with two outs. Phillips finished the contest 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Stephanie Shoup and Angela Arredondo also collected a RBI in the contest. Shoup, Schick, Smith and Morrison each tallied hits in the outing.

After a scoreless three innings in the second contest, the Tigers erupted for six runs in the fourth frame led by Kelsey Cooper's 2-RBI, double that scored Shoup and Morrison.  Cooper advanced to third on the throw and later scored on a Nicole Bailey sacrifice fly to close out the inning.

Cooper, who finished the outing going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, doubled again in the fifth inning scoring Allison Lockhart and Rebecca Schick. The two-bagger was one of only two hits in the frame as the Red and White scored eight runs in part to six walks issued by TU pitching.

Tamara Vickers, Taylor Beck, Schick and Shoup also logged base hits in the contest. Vickers, Schick, Phillips, Morrison and Bailey each scored runs.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 21 against Southern Arkansas. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
