Grand Slams Lead UWA to Game Two Win; Tigers Split Doubleheader with SAU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --  A pair of grand slam homeruns help propel the University of West Alabama softball team to a 15-5 win over Southern Arkansas on Wednesday evening. The victory secured a split in the doubleheader after UWA (13-11) fell 11-4 in the opener. SAU falls to 13-23 overall.

Angela Arredondo ended the contest on a walk-off, grand slam that run-ruled the Lady Muleriders in the second contest. The Mesa, Ariz., native finished the night 1-for-4 at the plate with the four RBI and two runs scored. The homer was the third of the season for the junior and sits second on the squad.

Rebecca Schick also claimed a grand slam in the outing coming in the third frame scoring all four runs that inning. The homer was the second of the twinbill for the New Orleans, La., product as she hit a solo shot in the opening contest. The sophomore has a team-best eight on the campaign.

Jessica Brock (8-3) logged her sixth complete game of the season in the win. The freshman from Gallion, Ala., allowed five runs with four earned on eight hits while recording six strikeouts with three walks. The eight victories on the rubber lead the team and rank third in the Gulf South Conference.

UWA took an early 7-2 lead with seven runs in the home half of the second inning. Nicole Bailey drove in three runs during the inning with a double to left that plated Arredondo, Kelsey Cooper and Brittany Smith. The Red and White totaled five hits in the frame and concluded the outing with 14 total.

Tamara Vickers, Schick, Morgan Morrison, Cooper, Bailey and Taylor Miller each logged multiple hit performances in the decision.

SAU, leading 2-0 early, tacked on five runs in the third inning to extend its margin and claim the opening game of the double dip. The Lady Riders recorded three hits during the frame and capitalized on one Tiger miscue to tally the five spot. A Savannah Quintana double scored three of the runs.

After the Tigers added its first run in the bottom of the frame, the Blue and Gold posted three runs in the fourth and never looked back.

Kristen Skinner (5-3) pitched three innings in the loss. The Toxey, Ala., native allowed seven runs, three earned, on six hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.

Morrison and Miller each tallied two hits for four of the Tigers' 10 total in the contest. Miller also recorded two RBI.

West Alabama returns to action this weekend with a pair of conference doubleheaders. UWA opens competition on Saturday, Mar. 24 against Christian Brothers and closes the weekend out on Sunday, Mar. 25 versus Delta State. Both twinbills are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts.
