Tiger Softball Hosts Christian Brothers, Delta State This Weekend

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama returns to the diamond for a pair of Gulf South Conference doubleheaders this weekend. UWA (13-11, 3-3 GSC) hosts Christian Brothers on Saturday, Mar. 24 and concludes the weekend on Sunday, Mar. 25 against Delta State. First pitch for both twinbills is scheduled for 2 p.m.

UWA enters the weekend after winning three of its four games during the mid-week. The Tigers swept a pair from Tuskegee and followed that with a split of former GSC member Southern Arkansas.

CBU had a five-game win streak snapped in a 2-1 setback to North Alabama. The Lady Bucs split a double dip with Alabama-Huntsville in its last outing. Allyson Grooms is hitting .395 to lead the Red and Black on the campaign while Kim Adams has recorded seven of the Lady Bucs' eight win in the circle while posting a 2.71 ERA.

DSU has split its last eight games, but claimed its last outing in conference play with a 4-3 decision in extra innings over Alabama-Huntsville last Sunday. The win secured a split with the Lady Chargers. Marisa Sanders leads the Lady Statesmen at the plate with a .356 batting average. Sanders sits fourth on team in RBI with 12 and leads the squad in homeruns with three.

Saturday marks the first time the Tigers have hosted CBU since Mar. 1, 2008 – a 13-11 win for the Tigers. The Lady Statesmen swept the Red and White its last trip to Livingston on Apr. 5, 2005.

VICKERS LEADING THE WAY FOR UWA
Tamara Vickers leads the Tigers at the dish with a .436 batting average. The junior from Lawndale, Calif., native is tied for the second on the squad in RBI with 12. Vickers also sits atop the GSC in triple with four.

FRESHMAN HURLER IMPRESSIVE
Jessica Brock has been spectacular in the circle for the Tigers this season. The Gallion, Ala., product is third in the GSC in wins (8) and fourth in strikeouts (58). Brock is the only freshman hurler to sit among the top pitchers in the conference.
 
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP FOR SCHICK
Rebecca Schick has picked up where she left off a season ago. The New Orleans native has cranked out eight homeruns on the season to bring her career total to 16. In 2011, Schick finished third on the squad in homeruns. The sophomore also leads the Tigers with 29 RBI on the campaign which is fourth in the conference.

ATKINSON CLOSING IN ON WIN 300
Head coach Will Atkinson is narrowing in on 300 career wins. The skipper began the season 2012 slate with 281 wins and sits six wins away from the 300 plateau.
 
SWEPT… TWICE
West Alabama swept GSC Player and Pitcher of the Week twice this season. Jessica Brock has claimed Pitcher of the Week on consecutive weeks while Taylor Miller and Taylor Beck have each taken Player of the Week honors.

NO-HITTER
Jessica Brock pitched a complete game, no-hit shutout for the first time in the Red and White en route to her fourth victory of the season. The freshman registered a career-high 10 strikeouts while walking just four batters in a 10-0 victory over Tuskegee.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
Under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Will Atkinson, the Tigers have recorded a 72-30 mark at the UWA Softball Complex. This weekend's doubleheaders are four of eight straight home conference games for the Red and White.

NEW FACES FOR 2012
West Alabama welcomes 12 newcomers to the 2012 squad. Among the new faces are GSC top newcomers Jessica Brock, Kelsey Cooper and Stephanie Shoup. The total newcomer lists comprises of eight juniors, a sophomore and three freshmen.

SKINNER NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
Kristen Skinner was tabbed as the lone UWA representative following a stellar first season with the Red and White. Last season, the Toxey, Ala., native tossed 179.2 innings while compiling a 20-2 record and a 2.10 ERA. The senior pitcher recorded three, double-digit strikeout performances en route to fanning a conference-best 178 batters and nabbing first team laurels.

TIGERS LOOKING TO CONTINUE SUCCESS FROM 2011
West Alabama finished its 2012 season with a final record of 38-19 along with a berth in the NCAA South Super Regional. UWA has claimed 38 wins the last two seasons. The Tigers have registered 30-plus wins the last three seasons, including 42 in 2009.
