LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team picked up its second straight, Gulf South Conference sweep taking a pair from Delta State on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (17-11, 7-3 GSC) held off the Lady Statesmen (12-17, 2-8 GSC) in the opener 5-4 and belted the Green and White 9-3 in the second contest.
With the sweep of DSU and Christian Brothers on Saturday, the Tigers have recorded back-to-back, conference sweeps for the first time under head coach

Tamara Vickers led the Red and White with five hits in the two games as the Lawndale, Calif., native went 5-for-7 at the dish with three runs scored and a RBI.
Taylor Beck added a team-best five RBI in the twinbill with four coming in the second outing on a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
The pitching duo of
Kristen Skinner (7-3) and
Jessica Brock (10-3) each notched complete game victories in the circle. Brock allowed 10 hits in the seven innings, but only allowed three runs with two of earned with three strikeouts. Skinner struck out four with four runs allowed – two of those earned - on nine hits in the opening affair.
Despite being out-hit in the opener 9-6, the Tigers were able to hold off a late charge from DSU. UWA jumped out to an early lead with two runs in each of the first and second innings. Back-to-back, RBI singles from
Kelsey Cooper and Beck recorded the first two runs of the contest for the Tigers.
Taylor Miller crossed the dish for the third run on a double by Vickers and in the second inning as Vickers scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Stephanie Shoup.
The Red and White held the four-run advantage until the fifth when DSU cut the lead to within a run on a three-run, pinch-hitting, homerun by Caroline Womack.
Shoup extended the lead to two runs in the home half of the frame scoring on a play at the plate that helped
Morgan Morrison reach on a fielder's choice.
After cutting the lead to within a run for the second time in the game in the sixth inning, DSU attempted to tie the contest at 5-all in the seventh, but with already two outs Amber Adock was erased for the third out trying to return to the third base on a single by Marisa Sanders.
In the second contest, UWA totaled runs in five of the six innings it came to the plate, including three runs in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Beck drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single that scored Morrison and
Rebecca Schick. Cooper collected the first run on a sac fly to right field that scored Shoup.
After the two teams exchanged a run each, Morrison put the Tigers up 5-2 on a leadoff, homerun the third to mark her second of the season.
DSU again cut into the lead in the fifth inning with a run, but it would be the final one of the day for the Lady Statesmen as UWA pounded out two runs in fifth and an additional two runs in the sixth to game control of the contest and complete the sweep.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 31 as the Tigers host North Alabama at 2 p.m. The Tigers wrap the weekend action on Sunday, Apr. 1 at 4 p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville.
