Tiger Softball Swept by North Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a doubleheader to North Alabama to force a three-way tie for second in the Gulf South Conference standings heading into Sunday's twinbill against Alabama-Huntsville. The Lions downed the Red and White 4-1 in the opener and closed out the double dip with a 7-2 victory in the second contest.

With the Tigers' two setbacks, they sit tied with UAH and West Florida at 7-5 in conference play.

UWA plated the first run of the contest in the opening game in the second inning, but witnessed UNA rally in the sixth with four runs to take a 4-1 lead through six complete frames.

With one down in the top of the sixth, a throwing error left the door open for the Lions who followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Shelby Goodman, who reached on the error, tied the contest at 1-all scoring on a fielder's choice play at the plate.

Dani Clowill and Kathryn Young each followed with RBI singles to lift the Lions into the lead at 3-1. The final UNA run came as Ashley Bonner scored on a Jayda Terry sacrifice fly to right field.

The Tigers managed just three hits in the outing with two coming off the bat of Taylor Beck.

Kristen Skinner (7-4) took the loss with a complete game effort in the circle. Skinner fanned three while giving up four runs – two earned – on six hits while walking a pair.

The Lions proved relentless in the second contest scoring all seven runs in the first four innings. The Purple and Gold pounded at 11 hits, including three homeruns en route to the five-run triumph. Goodman belted two of the homers in the contest for UNA, including a three-run shot to right field in the fourth frame to conclude the Lions' run support.

Jessica Brock (9-4) suffered the loss on the rubber with four innings pitched. The Gallion, Ala., freshman surrendered all seven runs on eight hits with only four runs earned while walking one and striking out two in the effort.

Hannah Griffin pitched two innings in relief walking just a pair and allowing two hits while Taylor Tucker tossed the final inning with a strikeout, a walk and a hit allowed.

UWA improved on its first game hit performance with eight hits in the second contest. Stephanie Shoup logged three of the Tigers' total hits while Tamara Vickers added two.

First on Sunday is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex. The first, 50 Tiger fans will receive UWA goodie bags compliments of the Sports Marketing Club.
