FLORENCE, SC – The University of West Alabama softball team drew a split on the day after an 11-2 victory over Brevard on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (4-6) opened the day with an 11-8 loss to Francis Marion.
Stephanie Shoup,
Tamara Vickers,
Taylor Miller and
Rebecca Schick each hit over .500 on the day with
Morgan Morrison recording a .375 clip at the dish. Miller and Morrison combined for 9 runs driven in during the split.
UWA jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first two innings with three runs in the first following by a four spot in the second inning.
The first four Tigers logged hits to lead to the first couple of runs in their first at-bat. The final run came on a
Scarlett Wright sacrifice fly to left field that scored Shoup. Shoup drove in the first run of the contest with a double down the left field line that plated Vickers.
Morrison drove in 3 of the Tigers' 4 runs in the second frame with a double to left field that scored Schick, Shoup and Vickers. Schick plated the first run of the inning draw a bases load walk that scored
Nicole Bailey.
Jessica Brock (3-1) picked up the win in the circle with 4 innings allowing a run on 3 hits.
Hannah Griffin tossed the final 2 innings allowing a run on a pair of hits.
After each scored a run in the fourth inning, Miller added the final 3 Red and White runs on a double down the left field line scoring Morrison, Schick and Shoup.
After a turbulent start in the first game, the Tigers battled back with 6 runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-5 advantage. UWA cranked out 6 hits with Morrison, Miller and
Nicole Bailey each drove in runs during the frame.
A 6-run, 6-hit fifth inning regained the lead for FMU. Lindsey Brown proved the big bat in the inning with a double to left field that scored Murphy McConnell and Jazz Holliday.
UWA attempted a rally in the seventh inning putting a pair of runners aboard with two outs.
Allison Lockhart became the first run of the inning scoring on an error by the third basemen. The Tigers' final run came as
Tamara Vickers drove in
Mandi Headrick with a single.
Taylor Tucker was saddled with her first loss of the season. The Philadelphia, Miss., native surrendered 6 runs on 10 hits in 3 innings of relief. Tiger start
Kristen Skinner tossed 3 innings. The Toxey, Ala., product allowed 5 runs on just 4 hits.
Katie Carnes (4-2) logged the win in the circle.
West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 6 as the Tigers open the home slate against Tuskegee. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
