LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's tennis team evened its overall season record to 4-4 with a dominating 9-0 victory over West Georgia on Tuesday afternoon.
The UWA women rolled past the Wolves at every court, winning each doubles position by at least six games while claiming five straight-set wins in singles. The closest UWG could get the entire day was a shortened three-set tiebreaker at the sixth and final position.
West Alabama started the afternoon with three large wins at the doubles courts. UWA's pair of
Jill Furlong and
Lisa Becker picked up an 8-1 victory at the first court, before
Angy Cuellar and
Dasha Popova dominated their West Georgia counterparts, 8-0, at the second position.
Emily Gerding and
Courtney McDonald then gave West Alabama a 3-0 lead with an impressive 8-2 triumph at position No. 3.
Needing just two wins to clinch the match, UWA won all six singles courts with relative ease.
Natalia Cardenas took a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top court, while Cuellar added a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the second spot. Those wins were then followed by Popova's 6-1, 6-0 win and Gerding's 6-1, 6-0 defeat of her UWG opponent. The Tigers then ended the day with McDonald's impressive 6-0, 6-0 win and Jennifer Collins first win of the season – a 6-3, 1-6 (10) shortened match at the sixth and final court.
The Tigers are now set to host West Florida Friday at 1 p.m.
