BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team combined for 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Miles College on Wednesday afternoon at George Ward Park. UWA turned back MC (2-9) 12-9 in the first contest and blast the Golden Bears 13-1 in the night cap.
The pair of wins moves UWA to 7-7 on the campaign after a 1-3 start to the season. The sweep gives the Tigers their longest win streak of the campaign at three games.
UWA trailed 1-0 after four complete innings in the second game, but erupted for 8 runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Angela Arredondo led off the frame with a homerun to center field and the next three batters singled to load the bases.
Rebecca Schick gave the Tigers their first lead reaching on a fielder's choice that scored
Mandi Headrick. Brooklyn Phillips then followed with a 2-RBI single to left field to put the Red and White up 4-1.
One batter later,
Taylor Beck doubled down the left field line to plate two more runs in the frame. Arredondo and Headrick each drove in a pair of runs to close out the inning.
Kristen Skinner (2-1) logged the complete game victory in the circle. The Toxey, Ala., native scattered 6 hits in 6 innings of work while fanning 5 batters.
Phillips kick started a 5-run, Tiger fifth inning with a 2-RBI double to left center. The Tigers added two more runs as Phillips later scored in the inning on an MC error to increase the margin 11-1 and
Taylor Miller crossed the dish on a stolen base. The final run of the contest came on a Headrick single that scored
Scarlett Wright.
In the opener, UWA jumped out to an 11-0 lead in its first three trips to the dish, including a 7-run, third inning, but the Tigers only managed a run the remainder of the way.
Arredondo and
Stephanie Shoup each drove in a pair of runs during the inning with Shoup connecting on her first homer of the season.
The Golden Bears cut the lead to 11-7 with 3 runs in the fourth and a pair of errors led to 2 of the 4 runs in the fifth inning. MC attempted to rally in the seventh inning, scoring a pair of runs, but ended the contest with a runner being thrown out at the plate on a sacrifice fly.
UWA's lone other run came in the sixth inning as
Nicole Bailey singled to score Schick.
Freshman
Jessica Brock improved to 5-1 on the season in the start. The Gallion, Ala., product struck out 6 while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings of work.
Taylor Tucker picked her up first save 2/3 of an inning with a hit allowed.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 10 as the Tigers open conference play at West Florida. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
