Tigers Post Season Sweep of Miles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball completed a season sweep of Miles College with a 14-1 blasting following a 5-4 come-from-behind win in the opener. With the two wins, UWA (25-15) runs its win streak to a season-best eight games.

The Tigers hit four homeruns in the two victories with three coming in the opening game. Rebecca Schick logged the first two runs of the opener with solo homers in the second and fourth innings pushing her season total to 12.

Stephanie Shoup placed the Red and White in the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run homerun to left center that sored Tamara Vickers. The dinger was the third on the campaign for the Oviedo, Fla., native.

The Shoup homer came after Taylor Miller tied the contest by scoring from first on a Miles' throwing miscue.

The Tigers bats returned in the second game as the Red and White pounded out 11 hits en route to its 14 run total – a run from tying its season-high of 15 set against Southern Arkansas on Mar. 21. The double digit runs marks the eighth time the Red and White has scored in double figures.

UWA opened the contest with seven runs in the first frame as Nicole Bailey and Kelsey Cooper combined for four RBI in the inning as each recorded two-RBI doubles to set the table. Cooper finished the contest with a team-best four RBI tying Brooklynn Phillips for the lead. The Tigers plated all seven runs on five hits in the frame.

The opening inning total was all freshman Jessica Brock needed to move to 14-5 on the season. Brock struck out seven along with four hits and a walk in the complete game win.

West Alabama reached the double digit mark in the second inning off the bat of Phillips. The Columbiana, Ala., product cranked her third homer of the season – a three-run blast – over the right center field wall to put the Tigers up 10-0 after two innings. The homerun total ties Phillips for third on the team with Shoup.

UWA tallied four additional runs in the third inning as Cooper concluded the scoring with her second extra base hit of the contest – a triple that scored Schick and Angela Arredondo. Vickers scored just prior to the three-bagger on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Beck.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 11 at 5 p.m. against Stillman College.
