LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama softball team couldn't find the timely hits as the Tigers (27-17, 11-9 Gulf South Conference) drop a doubleheader to No. 1 Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon, 8-1 and 4-1. The two wins increase the Blazers win streak to 33 games on the season with a 39-2 record overall and 22-0 in the GSC.
UWA scored its pair of runs on nine total hits in the twinbill with six coming in the opener.
VSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second contest with the runs coming in the second inning. Courtney Albritton drove in two of the trio of runs on a double to left center. An error on the play allowed Albritton to advance to third where she later scored from on a single by Morgan Johnson.
Brianna Hancock held the Tiger bats at bay through four innings, not surrendering a hit until
Kelsey Cooper singled through the right side. Cooper later scored for the Red and White's only run on a single by
Nicole Bailey one batter later.
Brooklynn Phillips logged the only other hit for the Tigers in the outing in the seventh inning.
Hancock (12-1) finished the effort with the complete game victory striking out nine with three hits allowed and a walk.
Kristen Skinner (11-6) was saddled with the loss pithing 6.1 innings. The Toxey, Ala., native surrendered 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks on the afternoon.
In the opener, the two squads stood tied after two complete innings as VSU scored the first run, but the Tigers answered back with a run of its own as
Tamara Vickers singled up the middle to score Cooper.
The Blazers responded with three runs in the top of the third to regain the lead and never looked back in the contest. Natalia Morozova and Samantha Posey each doubled in the frame to combine for the three runs driven in.
The three-run margin proved to be enough for Blazer hurler Alanna Hadley as the senior improved to 20-1 on the campaign with a complete game, six-hit, five strikeout effort in the circle.
VSU added another four runs to increase its lead later in the contest, including three runs in its final at-bat.
Hannah Griffin (1-4) took the loss in the circle in a relief appearance with three runs allowed on five hits, a walk and strikeout in two innings of work.
Jessica Brock started things off for the Red and White with two innings on the rubber with a run allowed on two hits while striking out two.
Taylor Tucker also logged two innings in the circle with a run on three hits while Phillips pitched the final frame with three runs allowed on two hits with three walks.
West Alabama hosts West Georgia on Sunday, Apr. 15 at 2 p.m. on Senior Day 2012.
