Tiger Softball Sweeps West Georgia on Senior Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama softball team grabbed a sweep of West Georgia on Senior Day at the UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers (29-17, 13-9 Gulf South Conference) rallied back in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 win in the opener and then tagged the Wolves (13-33, 5-17 GSC) for an 8-1 victory in the night cap.

In the opener, Kristen Skinner pitched herself into fourth all-time in strikeouts with 11 punch outs on the afternoon thus moving her career mark to 284 and surpassing Tiger hurler Katie Ford on the list. The Toxey, Ala., native gave up a pair of runs – one earned – on four hits in the complete game win.

Sophomore Rebecca Schick proved to be the heroine in the triumph as the New Orleans, La., product drove in the game winning runs on a double through the left side. The walkoff hit marked the first for Schick as she finished the contest 1-for-3 along with a walk.

The win marks just the second time this season the Tigers have rallied back for the victory after trailing through six complete innings.

Brooklynn Phillips became the first run for the Tigers in the fifth inning as she scored on a fielder's choice, play at the palte that sailed high.

After UWG took the lead in the sixth with its two runs, the Red and White left a pair stranded in the sixth giving the Wolves a chance to add to their lead. However, Skinner would sit down the three UWG batters in strikeout fashion turning things back over to her offense for a chance as the come-from-behind win in their final at-bat.

In a replay of the opener, the two squads exchanged scoreless innings through three complete. After UWA retired the Red and Blue in order in the fourth, the bats came alive in home half of the frame pounding out seven hits and leading to seven runs.

Morgan Morrison led things off with a solo homerun in the inning for her fourth of the season drilling a ball of the center field wall in a steep wind. Schick followed with a double to the same part of the field nearly missing her 13th homer of the season as it hammered off the top of the wall. Schick later scored on a Phillips double to left giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Stephanie Shoup and Vickers increased the margin to 6-0 as the duo combined for four runs driven in. Schick added the final run on a single up the middle to score Shoup from third.

Jessica Brock (16-5) tossed six innings in the circle scattering just five runs along with three strikeouts in the victory.

After UWG added its only run in the fifth to break up the shutout, the Tigers placed an additional run on the board in the sixth to clinch the win as Shoup scored for the second time on a fielder's choice.

West Alabama closes out the 2012 regular season home slate on Wednesday, Apr. 18 as the Tigers host West Florida at 2 p.m.
