LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama softball team falls two games back of West Florida in the Gulf South Conference standings as the Tigers (29-19, 13-11 GSC) were blanked 2-0 and 3-0 in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Despite out hitting the Argos in the opener 9-5, the Red and White couldn't manage a timely hit to produce any runs in the contest as UWA stranded 10 on the base path.
Taylor Miller and
Morgan Morrison combined for 4 of the Tigers' hits as it marked the first time this season that the Red and White had out hit an opponent and fallen.
UWA left half of its 10 runners stranded in its final two at-bats, including a bases loaded bottom of the seventh that ended a line out into right field off the bat of
Rebecca Schick to conclude the contest.
Kristen Skinner (12-7) was registered with the loss in the complete game effort. The Toxey, Ala., native allowed both UWF runs on five hits and four walks in the outing with a pair of strikeouts.
The Argos scored on their first trip to the plate as Emma Johansen scored on an RBI, single to right field from Kasie Buckley. The Blue and Green added it's only other run in the third Kaley Kania scored on a Crystal Thompson sacrifice fly to right.
The two runs proved enough for Jordan Ratliff who improved to 8-7 on the season with five strikeouts and a walk in the complete game performance.
In the second contest, Sarah Scott kept the Tiger bats silent scattering a pair of hits in the complete game victory. The UWF hurler fanned four and walked two to improve to 10-7 on the campaign.
The Argos plated their first run in the second inning Bianca Lopez scored on an Ashliegh McLean single down the left field line. UWF clung to the narrow lead until the seventh frame when UWF added two more runs.
Buckley drove in the first run of the inning with a double that pushed Kania across the dish. Buckley later scored on a fielder's choice to conclude the scoring for the afternoon.
Jessica Brock (15-6) was charged with the loss allowing one run on one hit with four walks and a strikeout. The freshman was lifted after two innings in the circle as
Hannah Griffin tossed the final five frames. Griffin scattered four hits in the effort with four strikeouts and a pair of walks while surrendering two runs.
