FLORENCE, Ala. – Behind two strong pitching performances, the West Alabama softball team snapped a six-game losing streak to North Alabama on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (31-19, 15-11 Gulf South Conference) blanked the Lions 5-0 in the opener and followed with a 5-1 decision in the second contest.
Kristen Skinner improved to 13-7 on the season scattering three hits while fanning seven en route to the complete game victory. The strikeout performance moved the Toxey, Ala., native to within seven strikeouts of the career 300 mark.
Jessica Brock followed with a six inning outing in the second outing of the twinbill. Brock, a Gallion, Ala., product, displaced two hits and a run while improving to 17-6 on the year.
Hannah Griffin tossed the final inning of the affair.
UWA logged 11 hits in each contest to capture the sweep of its in-state rival.
Tamara Vickers strung together multiple hits in each contest. The Lawndale, Calif., native went a combined 5-for-9 as the only Tiger with multiple hits in the both outings.
Brooklynn Phillips went a perfect 2-for-2 in the opening affair while
Kelsey Cooper went 2-for3 in the second contest.
Taylor Miller drove in a pair of runs in the opener to capture the shutout win over the Lions with a double to left field that scored
Mandi Headrick and
Angela Arredondo.
After leading by just a run heading into the third inning of the night cap, Phillips and Cooper gave Brock all the run support she needed in the third inning with an RBI double and RBI single respectively. The Tigers added another run in the fourth to secure the victory.
West Alabama closes out the regular season on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 2 p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville.
