Tiger Softball Falls in Regular Season Finale

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The West Alabama softball team dropped its final two contests of the regular season falling 9-1 and 5-2 at Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday afternoon. The setbacks force the Tigers to the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss.

After UAH added a pair of runs in the sixth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases in their final at-bat, but left the bases full without a run. The Red and White posted three of its nine hits in the frame en route to out hitting the Chargers in the contest.

Tamara Vickers led UWA at the dish in the contest going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Kristen Skinner took the loss in the complete game performance. The Toxey, Ala., native allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and strikeout on the day.

The Tigers posted the first run of the contest, but UAH answered with two runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead. The Chargers added another run in the third to increase its lead to 3-1.

UWA cut into the margin in the fourth inning with Kelsey Cooper driving in Brooklynn Phillips with a single up the middle. The narrow deficit stayed there until the UAH sixth inning.

UWA struggled at the plate against Whitney Gilbert in the opener posting just four hits in the outing. Gilbert pitched just five innings in the victory striking out two and walking a pair to improve to 17-5 on the season.

The Tigers logged their only run in the second inning to cut the lead in half as Taylor Miller singled to score Kelsey Cooper. Stephanie Shoup, Morgan Morrison and Brooklynn Phillips logged the other three hits for the Red and White in the contest.

Back-to-back homeruns from Mary Kelley and Stephanie Needham in the fourth inning assisted in opening up the contest for the Chargers. Needham drove in four runs in the outing including the final two to end in the contest in the fifth inning.

Jessica Brock (17-7) pitched just 3.1 innings in the start. The Gallion, Ala., freshman walked six while allowing six runs on six hits in the effort.

West Alabama returns to action on Friday, Apr. 27 as the Tigers take part in the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss. Time and opponent are to be announced.
