CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of West Alabama softball team notched its second sweep of Delta State with a 5-4 and 6-2 win over the Lady Statesmen. The Tigers improve to 21-15 overall and 9-7 in the Gulf South Conference. DSU falls to 15-21 and 3-12 in the conference.
Morgan Morrison proved the biggest stick in the doubleheader going 5-for-7 at the dish with four runs driven in and scoring twice. The Lawley, Ala., product was the only Tiger with multiple hits in the opening game, including a solo homerun in the fifth to extend the Red and White's lead to 4-0.
Kelsey Cooper went for a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game. Morrison went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while
Taylor Beck was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the second half of the double dip.
Kristen Skinner (9-5) picked up the complete game victory with seven strikeouts. The Toxey, Ala., product surrendered four runs on four hits with four walks in the win.
Jessica Brock (12-5) pitched 5.1 innings in the victory in game two. The Gallion, Ala., native allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Taylor Tucker tossed the final 1.2 innings in the circle to garner her second save on the campaign.
After leading 4-0 through five complete innings in the opener, the Tigers found themselves in a 4-all tie heading into the final frame after the Lady Statesmen plated four runs in the sixth. The Tigers broke the deadlock in the seventh as Vickers scored on a sacrifice fly on the infield by Schick.
UWA plated a run in each of the first three innings in the second game and capitalized on a trio DSU miscues in the fifth inning to plate a pair of runs as
Rebecca Schick and Morrison scored on a couple of throwing errors.
DSU added its only two runs in the home half of the sixth, but the Tigers add an insurance run in the seventh as Beck scored on the fourth error by DSU in the contest.
Lauren Kendall and Sara Davis suffered the losses on the rubber for the Green and White.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, Apr. 7 at Christian Brothers. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
