Bats Help Lead Tigers to Sweep of Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second time this season, the University of West Alabama softball team posted a sweep of Christian Brothers as the Tigers total 24 hits on the day. UWA (23-15, 11-7 Gulf South Conference) run ruled the Lady Bucs 14-1 in the opener and turned back CBU 8-4 in the second contest.

The Tigers cranked out 12 hits in the first game, including three, three-run homeruns en route to posting 14 RBI. The 14 runs and 14 RBI are the most in conference play for the Red and White this season. The three homers in one game ties a mark set against West Georgia earlier in the campaign.

Rebecca Schick posted the first of the homers helping catapult out to a four run lead. Stephanie Shoup added the second of the dingers pushing the lead out to 7-0 with her shot delivered in the fourth frame.  The homer was the 10th of the season for Schick while Shoup recorded her second

Brittany Smith concluded the homerun show plating the first of seven runs in the fifth inning with her fourth of the campaign which stands as second on the team. Schick concluded the run effort in the fifth with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Kristen Skinner (10-5) held the Lady Bucs to their lone run while striking out three and allowing seven hits.

The Tigers, which for the second straight contest ripped off 12 hits, jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the second contest with three runs in the third inning. Schick and Shoup each supplied RBI singles in the frame to help increase the lead.

CBU rallied back with two runs in the home half of the inning to cut the lead in half. The Red and Black continued to cut into the Tigers' lead and finally drew even in the sixth with run.

UWA answered back in its final at-bat with four runs to regain the lead as Brittany Smith drove in half the runs on an infield single.

Jessica Brock (13-5) struck out two and surrendered nine hits in the complete game win. The 13 wins in the circle for the Gallion, Ala., native pushes her to second in the conference.

West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Apr. 10 as the Tigers open a 10-game homestand with Miles College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
