LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A goal at the 6:35 mark of the second overtime period lifted Shorter University over the University of West Alabama women's soccer team Friday evening, giving the Hawks a 3-2 win over UWA.
The loss represents West Alabama's first of the year, and moves the team's record to 2-1.
Head coach
Graeme Orr's team was able to take early control in the first half off a goal by sophomore forward
Nicki Gears 13 minutes in. After Gears scored her sixth of the season, the Tigers led at the break.
That slim 1-0 advantage soon disappeared as the teams headed to the second period. Shorter's Jessica Wright put one in off the assist from teammate Brandi Greenwald at the 54:34 minute mark of the game to tie it at 1-1.
Both teams then exchanged goals within three minutes of each other with Gears' score at 63:29 and Shorter's goal from Helena Farinha at the 66:59 mark.
Tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, neither team could get much going in the first 10-minute period. After a brief two-minute break , UWA and Shorter went to the second and final overtime period.
It did not take long for the Hawks to score the game-winning goal as Shorter's Kelli Davis used a shot just over four minutes in to take the win.
West Alabama returns to Tiger Stadium on Sunday to face Montevallo at 1 p.m. before beginning conference play next Friday at North Alabama.
