Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Christian Brothers scored 31 points off West Alabama turnovers on the way to a 56-41 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
The win improves Christian Brothers to 5-4 overall, 1-2 in GSC play. The loss is the fourth straight for West Alabama and the sixth in seven games. The Tigers are 3-6 and 0-3.
"We are still in a learning process," UWA head coach Craig Roden said of his team that includes 10 newcomers. "The growing pains are obvious. We have a breakdown, then a couple of good possessions, and then another breakdown."
West Alabama turned the ball over 19 times and shot just 27 percent from the floor (17-of-62) while being limited to its lowest scoring output of the season. In the first three conference games of the season the Tigers are averaging just 48 points and shooting 31 percent from the floor.
With 3:11 left in the first half, Christian Brothers led 24-20, but three turnovers and two missed shots led to no more UWA points and a 30-20 CBU lead at the half.
UWA got as close as nine points with six minutes to play, but a turnover and a three-pointer by Emily Reeves a minute later had the Lady Bucs back out in front by 14 points at 50-36 and CBU never looked back. CBU led by 20 with 1:56 to play.
"We can't panic and change up what we know is the right thing to do," Roden said. "We can't do things that are not going to be beneficial to us in the long run. We need to learn what is a good possession and what is not a good possession."
Kelcia Bufkin was the only West Alabama player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Jada Williams finished with eight rebounds.
Breanna Ridgell scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bucs. Taylor Pugh and Ashley Schaefer chipped in 10 apiece. Schaefer collected nine rebounds for CBU, who won the battle of the boards 43-38.
West Alabama is off until Jan. 4 when the Tigers begin a three-game road swing at Valdosta State. CBU is host to Shorter the same day.
