Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team built a six-run lead after three innings and held on to defeat Florida Tech, 7-4, in the first game of the Charger Chillout at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex, earning the Tigers a split in day-one action.
North Georgia jumped to a 6-1 lead after four innings before going on to hand UWA its first loss of the season, 6-4, in the Tigers' second game of the day.
The split leaves West Alabama with a 3-1 record. Florida Tech dropped to 3-7 and North Georgia improved to 7-2.
Michal Robertson had two hits and stole two bases to lead UWA in the victory over Florida Tech, while
Whitney Brown was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
Rebecca Schick also drove in two runs on a hit for the Tigers. Kara Dickinson had three hits and drove in a run for Florida Tech.
Tamara Vickers had two of West Alabama's five hits in the second game. Karlie Gillam and Tiffanie Burns both homered for North Georgia.
Sarah Ray (2-0) went five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, to earn the win for UWA in the opener. Amanda Smith (0-1) took the Florida Tech loss. Krysten Connelly (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, to earn the North Georgia win.
Jessica Brock (0-1) took the UWA loss, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in 3.2 innings.
West Alabama plays two more games in the three-day event on Saturday, meeting Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. and Palm Beach Atlantic at 5 p.m.
