West Georgia Downs UWA Women

Box Score

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite shooting just 29 percent from the field, West Georgia made the most of 32 trips to the free throw line to notch a 62-54 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Saturday at the West Georgia Coliseum.

The Wolves converted 26 of the 32 trips to the line to improve to 13-7 overall, 7-5 in the conference. West Alabama dropped to 9-11 and 4-8.

“West Georgia is playing well right now, but we weren't very sharp,” West Alabama head coach Craig Roden said. “We struggled at crucial times on defense, and at crucial times on offense we didn't take good shots.”

West Georgia jumped on the Tigers early, building a 24-14 lead by the 7:23 mark of the first half. UWA rallied to close the half, outscoring the Wolves 14-5 the rest of the way to trail 29-28 at the break. The Wolves put together a 16-9 to begin the second half that effectively put the game away.

West Alabama limited the Wolves to just 6-of-25 from the floor in the second half, but UWG made 21-of-26 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes. UWA's top two scorers, Nikkia Johnson and Brittany Weathers, managed just 16 points combined, 24 points below their combined scoring average.

“When you top two scorers combine to go 7-of-36 from the floor you are going to struggle,” Roden said. “It's also tough anytime you are on the short end of a 32 to 11 free throw attempt deficit. Still, that's not an excuse for the we played.”

Jerilsa Taylor scored 16 points for West Georgia to lead all scorers. Brittany Johnson and Mone Peoples both scored 13 for the Wolves.

Tamya Thompson scored 10 points to lead UWA. Synthea Reed collected 11 rebounds to go with her six points, all scored in the first half. UWA won the rebounding battle 49-45.

West Alabama remains on the road at West Florida Thursday.
