Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – Fourth-ranked Valdosta State handed the University of West Alabama softball team its fifth consecutive loss, sweeping the Tigers in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Steel's Diamond. VSU won the opener, 5-2, and the second game, 13-2.
The sweep improves Valdosta State to 30-8 overall, 15-6 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 23-16 and 10-14, losing for the 10
th time in its last 12 GSC games. The Tigers end a four-game road swing with a doubleheader Sunday at West Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
VSU starters Hanna Lythberg (8-3) and Brianna Hancock (11-3) went the distance for both pitching wins. Sarah Ray (14-6) and
Jessica Brock (4-8) absorbed the West Alabama losses.
A double off the bat of
Kelsey Cooper was the only extra base hit for the Tigers in the first game.
Anna Shartzer drove in both Tiger runs with a single in the fifth inning. UWA managed just four hits in the opener and only three in the second game, including
Rebecca Schick's sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth inning.
Outfielder
Morgan Johnson was 3-for-6 with six runs batted in to lead the Lady Blazers offensively. Kiley Rusen had four hits for Valdosta State.
