Late Surge Elevates UNA Over UWA

Box Score

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama outscored West Alabama 11-3 over the last three minutes to defeat the Tigers, 75-63, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action Thursday at Flowers Hall.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for UNA, improving the Lions to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 4-11 and 1-8 in the first of a four-game road swing.

North Alabama was clinging to a 64-60 lead with 3:18 left to play before making 5-of-6 free throws over the next 1:26, culminating with an old-fashioned three-point play by Jane Lyde at 1:52 to ice the game away.

"We played pretty well offensively, but defensively we weren't up to the challenge in certain spots," UWA head coach Craig Roden said. "We need to do a better job of limiting transition points and drives to the basket."

UNA led 34-31 at the half, but shot 56 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. West Alabama converted 52 percent in the second half, but got outscored 33-20 in the paint over the course of the game.

"We went to a four-guard offense after we found out that Alexis Hewitt will be out for the season with an injury and that will take some time to get in sync," Roden said. "We will have a hard time making up for Lexi's presence. She cleans up a lot of mistakes on defense and we missed her in that role tonight."

Quentinette Odom led West Alabama scoring with 18 points. Jada Williams followed with a career-high 16 and Jasmine Hampton chipped in 12.

Jennifer Towne and Nichelle Fillmore led five UNA players in double figures with 15 points each. Lyde contributed 13, while Delisa Madry and Lauren Faris had 12 apiece.

West Alabama remains on the road at Union on Saturday.
