Shorter Extends UWA Slide to Nine

Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Shorter shot 65 percent from the floor on the way to an 84-68 victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference women's college basketball action Sunday at the Winthrop King Centre.

The Lady Hawks led from tip off to final buzzer to improve their record to 6-16 overall and 4-12 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 4-18 and 1-15, losing its ninth consecutive game. The Tigers have yet to win in 12 road games this season.

"Shorter played really well. They have a senior team. They moved the ball crisply and shot the ball well," UWA head coach Craig Roden said. "They had us chasing from the opening tip. Their first nine points were on three-pointers and that was a sign of things to come."

Shorter shot 60 percent (9-for-15) from three point range, with Tamarr Williams making 4-of-4 from long range to finish with 14 points. Lynette Harris also scored 14 for the Lady Hawks. Karisma Boykin chipped in 11 points and dished out eight assists.

"When a team shoots 65 percent from the floor and 60 percent from three you are doing well to come out of there with a 16-point game," Roden said. "It's hard to win when you are matching threes with twos."

Shorter's bench outscored Tiger reserves 38-18, while the Lady Hawks dished out 20 assists to the Tigers' three. The Lady Hawks outrebounded UWA 30-23.

Kelcia Bufkin scored 19 points for West Alabama to lead all scorers. Jada Williams chipped in 16 points and six rebounds.

West Alabama is at home Tuesday against Alabama-Huntsville. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
