UAH Holds Off Second Half UWA Surge for 95-84 GSC Win

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Alabama-Huntsville held off a second-half West Alabama surge to notch a 95-84 Gulf South Conference women's college basketball victory over the Tigers Tuesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The victory improves the Lady Chargers to 15-8 overall and 10-7 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 4-19 and 1-16.

Trailing 48-30 at the half, West Alabama got the offense in gear to score 54 points in the final 20 minutes. The 84 points marks a season-high for the Tigers. On the flip side, UAH's 95 is also a season-high for points allowed.

"UAH comes out with all that trapping, so you have to be ready to make plays, shoot it and drive it to the rim," UWA head coach Craig Roden said. "In the first half we were hesitant, but in the second half we attacked the gaps and our shooters got some good spot-up shots."

West Alabama placed five players in double figures for the first time this season, led by Shameika Hart with 19 points. Quentinette Odom added 18, Kelcia Bufkin 16, Jada Williams 13 and Jasmine Hampton 10 for the Tigers.

Current GSC Player of the Week Jordan Smith poured in 26 points for UAH to lead all scorers. Jasmine Hammon chopped in 16, Josi Saunders 14, Kendra Jones 11 and Juanice Newton 10 to round out double figure scoring for the Lady Chargers.

"We were able to cut it to six points ate in the game and then missed two layups and gave up back-to-back three-pointers to arguably the best shooter in the conference in Jordan Smith," Roden said. "We keep fighting and haven't given up yet.

"I would challenge anyone to find a team with our record who hasn't already mailed it in," Roden said. "Our kids are still playing hard and haven't stopped working."

The Tigers travel to Lee Thursday night for the final road game of the season. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. CST.
