Zach Parks won for the fourth time in as many outings and
Tyler Richburg slapped a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning as West Alabama salvaged a split with West Georgia in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field.
West Georgia won the first game, 3-2, before Parks and reliever
Tanner Rainey combined to in game two shut out the Wolves, 2-0. West Alabama is 9-4 overall and 2-3 in GSC play. West Georgia is 5-8 and 2-3.
With Parks (4-0) and UWG starter Cole Janousek (0-2) locked up in a scoreless duel through four-and-a-half innings, the Tigers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth in the second game. Parks and Rainey, who worked the final two-thirds of the last inning for his second save, made it stand. Parks scattered five hits and struck out seven in 6.1 innings.
"I had to bear down and make some pitches and I was able to do that," Parks said. "I know we are going to put up runs this year, so as long as we execute we have a chance to okay."
Luigi Mendez, who had two hits in the nightcap and a pinch-hit double in the opener, singled to start the fifth.
Jack Cockrum moved him over before
Joel Murphy coaxed a walk and
Jocobby Robinson pushed a bunt single to load the bases. Richburg drove in Mendez and Murphy with his full-count hit.
"We didn't play well in game one. We put ourselves in a difficult situation with the errors and West Georgia responded," UWA head coach
Gary Rundles said. "You have to tip your cap to Zach (Parks) in the second game and
Tyler Richburg came up big.
"I am proud of us for coming back in the second game," Rundles said. "Even though we didn't play well, we lost a heart-breaker in the first game."
West Georgia parlayed nine hits and four West Alabama errors to a win in the opener. Shaq Jackson had three hits and Sumner McWhorter two for UWG in the first game. Five different Tigers had a hit in the opener, including a solo home run by
Adam Chamblee, his first of the season.
Cody Skinner (2-2) went the distance for the UWG win in the opener, allowing just one earned run and five hits in nine innings of work. West Alabama reliever
Logan Colvin (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief of starter
Taylor Bratton.
The Tigers and the Wolves play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Right-hander
Fernando Gonzalez (2-1) is scheduled to pitch for the Tigers. The radio play-by-play of the game can be heard on ESPN 104.9.
