Scarlett Wright belted a grand slam in game two of a doubleheader to defeat West Georgia 7-6 and complete the sweep for West Alabama at the UWA Softball Complex on Saturday.
Whitney Brown doubled with two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to lift the Tigers to a 1-0 victory.
The victories mark six straight for UWA and improved the Tigers to 11-6 overall, 3-1 in the GSC. West Georgia entered the series leading the conference but fell to 10-5 and 2-3.
"Anytime you get a chance to win a series it's great," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
"We came out and played great today. Both of our starting pitchers did really well.
Jessica Brock only made two mistakes and one of the best hitters in the league made her pay for it. Overall though, I was really proud of our effort. In the first game we cleaned up our defense; something we had focused on all week. The hitting was good all day long. The bottom of the lineup really came through for us.
Brown's double was her only hit of the game and brought in
Scarlett Wright for the game's only run. The Tigers left eight runners on base, while the wolves left seven.
Sarah Ray-Averett (7-1) picked up her first shutout of the year, allowing only four hits. Meagan Stover (3-1) took the loss, allowing eight hits.
Wright's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth came as her first home run of the season and gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead after a homerun by UWG's Nicole Yancy in the top of the first.
The Tiger bats continued to swing through the next two innings.
Jordyn Whiddon homered for the second time this year in the fifth and
Lydia North notched her second triple in the sixth that added two more runs.
With UWA up 7-1 in the top of the seventh, the Wolves added in five more runs with Yancy also tallying a grand slam. She ended game two 2-for-3.
Wright and Whiddon each finished 1-for-1 at the plate while North ended 1-for-4.
Jessica Brock (2-2) took the win in the circle, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Katie Turner (1-3) entered in the fourth inning and gave up four earned runs on five hits to get the loss.
The three game series will conclude tomorrow with game three set for 2 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
"We look forward to coming out tomorrow and finishing the sweep," said Atkinson. "Series wins are what you play for, but any time you can get a sweep it will really propel you, especially this early in the conference schedule."
