Yancey Beats UWA With Seventh Inning Homerun

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Nicole Yancey hit a homerun in the top of the seventh inning to bring in two runs and give West Georgia a 4-3 victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.

West Alabama won the first two games of the series to hang on to the series win, but fell to 11-7 overall, 4-2 in the GSC. West Georgia halts a four game losing skid to improve to 11-5 and 3-3.

"We were able to put together the hits that we needed, we just let their best player beat us," said UWA head coach Will Atkinson.

"We didn't execute the way that we should have at the end of the game, but it is a team game. You win as a team and lose as a team. At the end of the day we were still able to win the series and that puts us in good position in the conference race."

West Georgia took the first lead in the top of the second with a single by Heather Sexton that batted in two runs.

UWA's Whitney Brown posted her second homerun of the series that brought in two runs and tied the game at 2-2. Anna Shartzer belted her third homerun of the season in the bottom of the fifth to give the Tigers their first lead of the day at 3-2.

Yancey's homer was her third of the series and was her only hit of the day in four at bats.

Meagan Stover (4-1) entered in the sixth inning, striking out five batters and allowing only one hit to pick up the win.  Skylar Davis (2-2) entered in the fourth and gave up the two runs to Yancey to take the loss.

West Alabama remains at home to take on in-state GSC rival North Alabama in a three game series beginning on March 1. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
