Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Even though the West Alabama women's basketball team battled back from 17 points down, West Florida was able to stave off a Tiger comeback to post a 56-49 Gulf South Conference women's college basketball victory Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
The victory improves the Lady Argonauts to 11-7 overall and 7-5 in GSC play. West Alabama is 4-16 and 1-13.
West Florida led UWA by 17 points with 1:15 left in the first half before taking a 31-19 advantage into the break. West Alabama battled back to cut the lead to 51-49 with about seven minutes play, but couldn't get even or take the lead.
"We had an opportunity, but couldn't push through. We were down two (points) and we miss both ends of two free throws," UWA head coach Craig Roden said. "Then we are down two again and miss the front end of a one-and-one. Then we turned the ball over three straight times.
"We put ourselves in a position to win, but couldn't make the plays when we needed when we needed them," Roden said. "We thought going in we had to win the middle third of the floor because they are so good there with their acceleration and getting the ball down the floor. We knew we needed to get back ahead of them and not turn the ball over. We didn't do either."
Katie Bobos scored 13 points and Toynetta Johnson chipped in 10 more to lead West Florida scoring. Bobos had nine rebounds, for the Lady Argos, who scored 23 points off 19 West Alabama turnovers.
Quentinette Odom scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to record her second straight double-double, her fourth of the season.
Kelcia Bufkin contributed 13 points and
Jada Williams 10 to round out double-digit scorers for the Tigers.
West Alabama closes a three-game homestand by hosting West Georgia Thursday at Pruitt Hall.
