Parks Pitches Tigers to Split With UNA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Zach Parks picked up his fifth win in as many starts to lead West Alabama to a 3-1 win in the second game of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with North Alabama Saturday at Tartt Field. UNA won the first game, 2-0.

The split leaves West Alabama 12-5 overall and 4-4 in GSC play. North Alabama is 5-11 and 2-6. The Tigers and Lions play the rubber game of the series Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Parks is not only off to a 5-0 start, but has a 0.56 earned run average in 32.1 innings pitched. Against the Lions he worked 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing one run and striking out two. Tanner Rainey struck out the only two batters he faced in the seventh to earn his third save. UNA starter Riley Sanderson (2-3) took the game-two loss.

"Zach Parks had another great outing. He commands both sides of the plate and just knows how to pitch," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "When you throw three pitches for strikes in any count you are going to have success."

Bradley Claunch (2-3) and Jacob Westerhouse combined to shut out West Alabama in the first game. Claunch struck out four over seven innings, allowing six hits. Westerhouse did not allow a run or a hit over two innings to earn his second save. UWA starter Taylor Bratton (1-3) absorbed the loss.

North Alabama scored single runs in the third and sixth innings of the first game. It was all they would need because West Alabama managed just six hits and left nine runners on base. Brett Guzay drove in a run on a ground ball and then doubled and scored in the sixth to lead the Lions.

"In game one we made no offensive adjustments. We had 19 fly ball outs," Rundles said. "You have to tip your hat to their pitchers. I thought our pitchers did well, but if you never score, you never have a chance to win. We definitely had better approaches in game two."

After spotting UNA a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the second game, UWA pushed across all of its runs in the fourth inning, parlaying two hits and two hit batters into three runs. Rainey and Luigi Mendez were hit to start the inning before Cockrum doubled to right field and a throwing error allowed Rainey to score. A sacrifice fly by Trey Williamon and a single from Joel Murphy drove in the other runs.

Tyler Richburg and Jocobby Robinson had two hits each for UWA, who managed just 12 hits in the doubleheader. Guzay had four of North Alabama's 13 hits in the two games, driving in two runs.
