Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. –Carey Grace Peebles and Chloe Wolf each belted homeruns, Wolf a grand slam, in the top of the sixth inning to lift North Alabama to a 9-1 victory over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.
Â
The victory completed the series sweep for North Alabama and improved the Lions to 16-5 overall, 7-2 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 11-10 and 4-5. Â
Â
"I thought we came into today with a good game plan," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
Â
"We were going to throw by committee and through five innings we gave up only one run on one hit. We just managed to give up eight more runs in the final two innings. The plan only works when everyone executes. It's tough to take one on the chin and get swept at home, but the GSC is the best conference in Division II and UNA is good ball club. We just have to pick ourselves up now and be ready for mid-week games."
Â
A wild pitch by the Tigers in the top of the first inning put UNA on the board first. Shelby Goodman and Harlie Barkley extended the lead to 4-0 on two singles in the sixth.
Â
Whitney Brown homered in the bottom of the sixth to give UWA it's only run. Brown finished 3-for-3 at the plate and now leads the Tigers with five homeruns this season.
Â
Peebles and Wolf's homeruns were their only hits in three at-bats each. Goodman finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Barkley ended 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Â
Hillary Caprenter (12-8) struck out three batters and did not give up a walk through seven innings to pick up the win. Five Tiger pitchers saw action, with
Sarah Ray-Averett (7-3) entering in the fifth to take the loss. Ray-Averett allowed three runs and four hits through one and a half innings. Â
Â
The Tigers now return to the road to take on Miles College in a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.Â
