Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama softball honored its seven seniors with a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over Union on Saturday, the Tiger's Senior Day. UWA won game one 3-2 and game two 13-5.
West Alabama improved to 23-18 and 10-11 in the GSC. Union fell to 23-20 and 7-14.
"I am really proud of our effort today, it was a great way to honor our seniors," said UWA head softball coach
Will Atkinson.
"In game one,
Jessica Brock came out and pitched a gem of a game. We had a lot of base runners on, but we still got the clutch hits when we needed them. The bats really came alive in the second game. We pounded out 13 runs."
With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh of game one, senior
Rebecca Schick singled to send junior
Lydia North home for the game winning run.
Senior
Anna Shartzer scored on a passed ball in the third to tie the game at 1-1, while junior
Miriah Chavez scored on a passed ball in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.
Schick ended 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers.
Reagan Schrader hit a home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. She finished 1-fo-2 with two runs.
Junior
Jessica Brock (5-4) struck out a season best of 11 batters through seven innings to pick up the win. Kelly Robey (17-15) walked five and allowed seven hits to take the loss.
In game two, the Tigers took an early lead scoring seven runs on six hits in the first inning and five runs on three hits in the second. Senior
Taylor Miller capped of the scoring streak with an RBI single in the third that extended the lead to 13-0.
Erin Picard put Union on the board in the top of the fourth with a three run homer. Reagan Schrader followed with a two run homer run in the fifth.
Nine Tigers tallied runs, while four recorded multiple scores. Miller finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and three RBI.
Scarlett Wright,
Lydia North and
Randa Simpson each posted two runs. Shartzer led with three RBI and 3-for-4.
Senior
Skylar Davis (6-3) took the win in game two allowing just one hit through three innings. Hailey Cummings (5-4) gave up five runs on three hits through the first inning to get the loss.
The Tigers will conclude the series with game three at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the UWA Softball Complex.
"It's nice to get the series under your belt on Saturday, so on Sunday you can focus on getting the sweep on Sunday," Atkinson said. "We will come out tomorrow and see if we can get it done."
