West Alabama Women Begin GSC Tennis Tourney Against UAH

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The University of West Alabama women's tennis team opens play in the 2014 Gulf South Conference Women's Tournament Championship Thursday against Alabama-Huntsville at Lagoon Park.
 
The Tigers are the No. 4 seed in the eight-team field. The Lady Chargers are the fifth seed. First serve in the single elimination format for UWA and UAH is 1:30 p.m. The winner will advance to play the winner of West Florida and Christian Brothers at 1:30 Friday, also at Lagoon Park.
 
West Alabama is 16-6 and the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Division South Region. UAH is 7-6. The Tigers and Lady Chargers have played once this season with UWA taking a 5-4 victory Feb. 19 in Huntsville.
 
West Florida (20-4) enters as the Tournament favorite, seeking its fourth consecutive title and league-leading 14th overall crown. UWF won the regular season title, going 9-0, en route to a No. 9 ITA National Ranking and No. 4 Regional Ranking.  No. 2 seed Valdosta State (12-4) is No. 15 nationally and No. 7 regionally. North Alabama (10-10) earned the No. 3 seed. Rounding out the field are No. 6 seed Delta State (5-11), No. 7 seed West Georgia (3-11) and No. 8 seed Christian Brothers (0-7).
