UWF Edges Out UWA for Doubleheader Sweep

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one and two runs in the final inning of game two to sweep West Alabama 7-6 and 8-7 in Gulf South Conference softball action on Friday.
 
UWF, who entered the day ranked eighth in the south region, improved to 25-19 overall and 13-11 in the GSC. UWA entered ranked 10th in the region, but fell to 24-20 and 11-13.
 
In game one, the Argonauts entered the seventh inning trailing 6-4. Caroline Kaston singled to bring in one run and later scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 6-6. A sacrifice bunt by Hannah Dowling added the game winning run in Danielle Sanders.
 
The Tigers scored six runs in the top of the third inning after trailing 2-0 since the first. The scoring surge was capped off by a two RBI single by Taylor Miller and a two RBI double by Anna Shartzer.
 
Hannah Dowling gave UWF its first lead with a two run home run in the first, while Danielle Sanders added a solo homer in the third.
 
Becca Taylor (1-0) entered in the third inning to get the win. She struck out three batters and allowed two hits through four innings. Sarah Averett (7-7) entered in the second inning, allowing three earned runs on seven hits to take the win.
 
In game two, the Tigers took a one run lead in the top of the seventh after a 6-6 stalemate through three innings. Schick hit a single through the left side that sent Whitney Brown in and put UWA up 7-6.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Kaston scored on a groundout by Lou Barnard to tie the game again. A single by Lauren Correia with two runners in scoring position on the following play gave UWF its final lead.
 
The Tigers were led at the plate in game two by Miriah Chavez and Lydia North. Chavez belted her first home run of the season to give UWA three runs in the top of the second. North followed with a three run homer in the third; her second of the season.
 
Brooke Hale (1-6) pitched the final four innings to pick up the win. She allowed one run on six hits. Alli Hall (4-2) took the loss. She struck out three, but allowed seven earned runs on four hits.   
 
The Tigers out-hit UWF 12-4 in game two, but gave up four errors.
 
The series will conclude with game three at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
