Home Runs Lift Shorter to Sweep Over UWA; Shartzer Breaks Records

LIVINGSTON, Ala. â€“Shorter strung together back-to-back home runs in both games of a doubleheader to defeat West Alabama 6-3 and 4-3 in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex on Saturday.
 
Shorter extended its win streak to seven straight to improve 26-9 overall and 14-4 in the GSC. West Alabama fell to 21-18 and 8-11.
 
"We just couldn't keep their hits in the yard today," said UWA head softball coach Will Atkinson. "We had chances to make plays with timely hits, but giving up home runs is what ultimately cost us."
 
Anna Shartzer posted two runs in game two giving her 168 for her career; the most since Bobbie Jo Cater (1989-1992). She had one double in game one giving her the school record of 58 career doubles; the most since Zayne Smith (1999-2002).
 
Kendall Johnson and Kayla Cooper belted the first pair of homers in the top of the eighth inning of game one. Johnson's brought in two runs combined with Cooper's solo shot gave the Hawks the victory.
 
After falling behind 2-0, the Tigers took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth. Lydia North scored first on a fielder's choice, while Rebecca Schick crossed home on a Taylor Miller single. Miller later scored on a passed ball to put UWA up 3-2. Miller and Shartzer each ended 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
Paige Rowland hit the first home run of the day for the Hawks in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
 
The Tigers took an early lead in game two with an RBI double by Whitney Brown and a RBI single by Lydia North in the bottom of the first. Brown brought in another run on a single in the second to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Shartzer led 3-for-4 at the plate, while Brown followed 2-for-4.
 
In the fifth, Cooper led off with her second home run of the day and Jackie Castaneda followed with her first to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later, Ericka Bynum put the Hawks up for the final time with a solo shot over centerfield.
 
Shorter totaled 18 hits with 10 in game two, while UWA posted 15 with eight in game two. The Hawks tallied 19 total runners left on; West Alabama 16.
 
Kalei Kimbrell (10-3) entered in both games to pick up each win. She struck out three batters in game one and six in game two. She did not allow a run and gave up a combined six hits through eight totoal innings.
 
Jessica Brock (5-4) took the loss in game one, but tallied her season high of 10 strikeouts. Sarah Ray-Averett (8-6) entered in the fifth inning of game two giving up one run to get the loss.  
 
The Friends of Jaclyn weekend series will conclude with game three on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
