Phillips' First Season Goal Lifts Tigers Over West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – University of West Alabama junior Ashley Phillips netted his first season goal in the final five minutes against the University of West Florida to lead the Tigers to 1-0 victory in Gulf South Conference men's soccer action at Tiger Stadium on Sunday.

The match marked the final regular season game at home for West Alabama, who end the season 4-0 in home GSC matches and on a seven game win streak. The Tigers improve to 7-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the league, tied with Alabama Huntsville for first place. West Florida falls to 8-4 and 3-3.

Phillips is the 11th Tiger to score in 14 matches this season. His goal came unassisted on a free kick 30 yards out in the 86th minute.

"A good thing we've done this year is being able to score a lot of different goals from different people in different positions," said UWA head coach Matthew Thorne. "West Florida is a top class squad, but we didn't give them too many opportunities. It was a lot of good individual performances but we were able to come together and get the win as a team."

The Tigers out-shot the Argonauts 13-7. Brad Louis (3-3) made two saves for his second shutout of the season; sixth shutout for the UWA defense. Andre Moreira (4-3) made three saves to take the loss.

West Alabama men's soccer has only two regular season matches remaining, begging with non-conference opponent Montevallo on Sunday. The Tigers will then remain on the road to close out the season against GSC foe Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 30.

Kickoff against the Falcons is set for 7 p.m. in Montevallo, Ala.
