Valdosta State Blanks the Tigers at Home

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Valdosta State combined to hit .406 attack percentage, holding West Alabama to .093, to defeat the Tigers 3-0 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action Friday.

Valdosta State improves to 16-5 overall and sit second place in the GSC standings, tied with North Alabama at 11-2. West Alabama falls to 7-16 and 5-8 in seventh place.

The Blazers took set one 25-18, hitting .526. After winning set two 25-18, they held the Tigers to a negative attack percentage in set three to secure victory with a 25-13 match win.

"We were pleased with how the ladies battled in sets one and two," said UWA head coach Jordan Lay.

"To play that well against a very tough team who is coming off a win against the top team in the conference is a big step for our girls. I think the first two sets would've been closer had we taken care of the ball behind the service line and attacking. We need to focus on the positives and build on them when come back out tomorrow."

Lea Jaklen boosted VSU's attack with 15 kills in 19 attempts. On defense, Natalia Campos led with 11 digs, while Jessica Codato and Lea Jaklen each posted four block assists.

UWA was led by Briana Sandifer with 10 kills and eight digs. She ended the match with .217 attack percentage. Callie Murphy tallied three service aces with 18 assists.

West Alabama volleyball returns to the court on Saturday to host the league's top ranked team, No. 20 West Florida. The match is set for 2 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
