CLINTON, Miss. – West Alabama came back from one set down to defeat Mississippi College 3-1 in Gulf South Conference women's volleyball action on Tuesday.
West Alabama snaps a seven match losing skid to improve to 8-17 overall and 6-9 in the GSC. Mississippi College falls to 2-23 and 1-13 on a 12 match losing skid. The Choctaws battled back from five points behind in set one to squeeze out a 28-26 victory. The Tigers responded by dominating the ensuing three sets and winning 25-16 in set two and 25-13 in both sets three and four.
"We are very proud of the entire team tonight," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay.
"Although we let set one slip away from us to a very scrappy MC team, we rebounded and focused on executing. The way we played in the last three sets, finishing sets and staying aggressive on every single ball, that was good to see. It was a complete team effort from start to finish and we are looking forward to carrying this over into Thursday's match home in front of our fans."
West Alabama combined to hit .264 attack percentage with
Yanesha Johnson leading with 13 kills, followed by
Briana Sandifer with 10 kills.
Jaime Lancellot posted .538 percentage with seven kills while leading the defense that out blocked the Choctaws 9-2. Lancellot finished with six block assists, while
Taylin McCarver knocked down two solo blocks and one assist.
Kimberly Hernandez kept the attack alive with 20 digs.
Callie Murphy and
Sam Burgess split time as setters finishing with 22 and 15 assists respectively.
Mississippi College hit .116 led by Jamila Biglow and Jenna Campbell with 11 kills each. Biglow finished with .476 attack percentage with 21 attempts.
West Alabama volleyball returns to its home court on Thursday to host GSC foe West Georgia. The match is set for 6 p.m. at Pruitt Hall.
