LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama volleyball rallied back to win in the fourth set after dropping the previous two to force a fifth, but fell short as Alabama Huntsville claimed the 3-2 Gulf South Conference victory by edging out the Tigers 15-13 in the final set at Pruitt Hall Tuesday.
Alabama Huntsville stretches its win streak to three as it improves to 14-3 overall and 5-3 in the GSC. West Alabama drops to 5-10 and 3-5. UWA opened the match taking set one 25-21. Following the Chargers' 25-17 win in set two and 25-23 win in set three, the Tigers took set four 25-20.
"In general the girls had a lot of resolve tonight, especially after getting down after set one and battling back to be in the match at the end," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay. "It takes a lot of guts and determination to battle back like we did. There is definitely a lot to be proud of and build off tonight in moving forward."
West Alabama led UAH in kills, attack percentage and blocks.
Briana Sandifer shattered her career single-game kill record with 23 total kills throughout the match.
Morgan Ray followed close behind with 19 kills as the team combined for 71.
Callie Murphy also set her career high with 47 assists.
As a team, UWA posted a .238 attack percentage led by
Shanna Witt with .538. Witt tallied seven kills in 13 attempts. UAH hit .223 with Anna Claire Johnson leading with 18 kills.
The Tigers' 10 team blocks bested UAH's five, led by Sandifer with six block assists and one solo.
Taylin McCarver added three assists with two solo blocks, while
Jaime Lancellot finished with four assists.
Vic Collins led the defense with 18 digs, followed by
Abby Ames with 17. Sandifer ended with a double-double, adding 17 digs.
West Alabama now takes to the road to face Union University on Friday. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Jackson, Tenn.
