CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The No.23 ranked team in the nation, Lee University, had to come from behind to score the equalizing goal and tie 1-1 in overtime with the University of West Alabama men's soccer team in Gulf South Conference action Friday night.
West Alabama, who moves to 5-4-2 overall, remains unbeaten in GSC play and at the top of the league standings at 4-0-1. Lee is now 7-2-2 and 2-0-1.
"It's always a positive when you can walk away from a conference road match without being defeated," said UWA head coach
Matthew Thorne.
"It wasn't the best overall performance by our lads, but we showed some good character to push through and not be beaten. We scored a great goal, but I was disappointed we conceded a sloppy goal on a set piece. We're still unbeaten in the GSC and want to push on from here."
The Flames outshot the Tigers 19-9 in the contest but only placed four shots on frame. West Alabama registered five shots on goal.
Jean-Baptiste Meyniel put UWA on the board first, striking a shot off of a
Christian Adkins throw-in in the 36
th minute.
Jon Finlay tied the match for the Flames with a header on a pass from David Perez at the 47 minute mark.
GSC Defender of the Week,
Joshua Bramwell (4-1-1) recorded three saves for the Tigers and allowed just his first goal in three matches; fourth goal in seven appearances. Lee goalkeeper Tom Halsall (7-2-2) registered four saves.
West Alabama men's soccer will remain on the road to take on Shorter University on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 3:30 P.M. (C.S.T.) in Rome, Ga.
